The XML-file format in Office 2003 is documented completely and reading this is recommended, especially if you want to create documents that Word consumes. This is the solution weÔÇÖve been recommending for folks that want to do things like generating Word documents on a server, etc. Unlike the binary format, XML was designed to be easy to consume and document.

You can now download the Microsoft Office 2003 XML Reference Schemas and related documentation and this includes:

Overview articles on WordprocessingML (the XML file format for Microsoft Office Word 2003), SpreadsheetML (Microsoft Office Excel 2003) and FormTemplate XML schemas (Microsoft Office InfoPath 2003).
Reference documentation on the Microsoft Office 2003 schemas, detailing every element and types.

When handling exceptions in WinForms, there will inevitably be some (unknown) exceptions that you do not handle in your error handling code for the form. This is guaranteed due to the non-linear nature of WinForms. To handle these you should register your own handler with the Windows forms API using the Application.ThreadException event. Doing this suppresses the informational (but less professional) debug dialog that comes up by default.

An example on http://samples.gotdotnet.com/quickst...orHandler.aspx shows how to do this.

This only works, however, for the thread that is pumping GUI messages, and so you will still have to rely on the CLR unhandled exception handler for all other exceptions (finalizer thread, thread-pool thread, manual thread, etc.). You can register for this handler using the AppDomain.UnhandledException event.

Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) provides a rich set of system management services built in to the Microsoft Windows operating systems. A broad spectrum of applications, services, and devices are available that use WMI to provide extensive management features for information technology (IT) operations and product support organizations. The use of WMI-based management systems leads to more robust computing environments and greater system reliability, which allows savings for corporations.

We now have a document available that describes which network ports and protocols are used by which server products and subcomponents in the Windows Server System. Finding this out was surprisingly non-trivial and there has not been a complete list before now.
Two documents naming and describing these ports are available publicly.

A knowledge base article is created which can be found at: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;832017

    download ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/software/.../Dols_iis.zip, unzip it
extract the file lcppn201.dll to the BIN directory under Program Files\SharePoint Portal Server (or where they installed SPS) on each indexing machine on which they plan to run notessetup.exe.
If the file is not available, run a search for "lcppn201" on Lotus's support web site and download it from its location at the time.
Once the file is copied, notessetup.exe can be run. If notessetup.exe has been run before the file was copied, the SPS Search service on the computer must be stopped and restarted for the file copy to take effect.

Since its release in January 2002, the IBuySpy Portal Solution Kit has been embraced by the Microsoft .NET development community as an essential reference implementation for building ASP.NET applications. Affectionately known as IBS, the original portal included ten basic User Modules ( four of which had Mobile support ) as well as four Administration Modules for constructing data-driven intranet and Internet portal applications.

DotNetNuke (formerly known as the IBuySpy Workshop) is an automated content management system specifically designed to be used in Intranet and Internet deployments. The Administrator has total control of their web portal, membership, and has a powerful set of tools to maintain a dynamic and 100% interactive data-driven web site.

    Get it at http://www.dotnetnuke.com

You can see this as a nice open-source alternative to PHP Nuke

A good article by David Platt on sending MSMQ Messages securely across the internet with HTTP and SOAP.

'When creating a distributed system you frequently need to provide for communication between two entities that are not in sync. Microsoft Message Queue Server (MSMQ) provides the kind of store-and-forward messaging in a pre-built infrastructure that can help you address these kinds of messaging needs. In the past, MSMQ was accessed using a COM wrapper. Now there's a .NET wrapper that lets you accomplish your messaging goals easily from your Framework-based code. To illustrate the use of the wrapper, the author builds a messaging application, sends MSMQ messages over the Web, and discusses messaging security.'

Source code included. See it at http://msdn.microsoft.com/netframewo...t/default.aspx

People usually add plug-in support in their applications for the following reasons:

To extend an application's functionality without the need to re-compile and distribute it to customers.
To add functionality without requiring access to the original source code.
The business rules for the application change frequently or new rules are added frequently.

Here are some good resources if you want to build applications yourself that are extensible through plug-ins:

Microsoft is developing a new tool to help developers move to ASP.NET called the ASP to ASP.NET Migration Assistant.

The ASP to ASP.NET Migration Assistant is designed to help you convert ASP pages and applications to ASP.NET. It does not make the conversion process completely automatic, but it will speed up your project by automating some of the steps required for migration.

HereÔÇÖs how to try the ASP to ASP.NET Migration Assistant Alpha:
