UrlScan version 2.5 is a security tool that restricts the types of HTTP requests that Internet Information Services (IIS) will process. By blocking specific HTTP requests, the UrlScan security tool helps prevent potentially harmful requests from reaching the server.

    Details
UrlScan is a security tool that screens all incoming requests to the server by filtering the requests based on rules that are set by the administrator. Filtering requests helps secure the server by ensuring that only valid requests are processed. UrlScan helps protect Web servers because most malicious attacks share a common characteristic ÔÇö they involve the use of a request that is unusual in some way. For instance, the request might be extremely long, request an unusual action, be encoded using an alternate character set, or include character sequences that are rarely seen in legitimate requests. By filtering unusual requests, UrlScan helps prevent such requests from reaching the server and potentially causing damage.

For the download of version 2.5 and product details see http://www.microsoft.com/technet/tre...ls/urlscan.asp

As part of the principle of least privilege it is a bad idea to make your day-to-day domain account administrator on your machine. The main reason is that if a hacker compromises your account or you run a virus or perhaps click on the wrong button in a dialog box one day then any code executes with admin privileges and can therefore do anything it wants to.

The alternative is to run as a normal user and launch a program with runas and admin credentials where required. However, developers always complain they need admin rights. Well, they donÔÇÖt, even with IIS app debugging. There is now an article on MSDN telling you how to do it as well as Keith BrownÔÇÖs original article:

Last Tuesday Microsoft released our free add-on to SQL Server: Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services

    1) Why use SQL Server Reporting Services?
With Reporting Services, all employees can realize the promise of Business Intelligence to promote better decision-making for the organization.
For IT professionals, Reporting Services provides a scalable, secure reporting environment that eases corporate data management, access and delivery to end users.
For end users, Reporting Services delivers real-time information in familiar yet powerful tools found in the Microsoft Office System.
For business decision makers, Reporting Services provides the information they need when they need it more securely, accurately, and quickly so they can make critical business decisions.

    2) What are some scenarios where Reporting Services will be used?
Enterprise Reporting - Reports for in-house Sales, Finance, HR, Payroll systems
Embedded Reporting - Report processing included in applications
B2B Reporting - Partner reporting via extranets, Internet
Portal-hosted Reporting - Report collaboration, LOB integration

    3) How does it work?
    Report Authoring:
Report developers can create reports to be published to the Report Server using Microsoft or 3rd party design tools that support the Reporting Services XML Report Definition Language (RDL).
    Report Management:
Report definitions, folders, and resources are published and managed in a reporting web service. Managed reports can be executed either on demand or via schedule and are cached for consistency and performance.
    Report Delivery:
Reporting Services supports both on-demand ("pull") or event based ("push") delivery of reports. Users can view reports from a web-based frontend or subscribe for reports

    4) Is it difficult to implement?
The powerful and familiar development environment with Visual Studio .NET 2003 makes it easy to build and deploy reporting solutions with greater extensibility for future growth. Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services also provides the added flexibility of reporting against a wide variety of data sources including SQL Server, OLE DB, ODBC, Oracle, and other .NET data providers.

    5) If we already use another reporting product, why should we switch to the Microsoft BI and reporting platform?
Microsoft provides the most comprehensive BI and reporting solution on the market today with integrated OLAP, reporting, data mining, ETL and data warehousing functionality. Designed from the start with a web service architecture, Reporting Services provides a high degree of scalability and performance in a cost effective and easy to use solution for developers and end users.

    Happy reporting!

06-02-2004: Using SQL Server Notification Services and Reporting Services Together

SQL Server provides a lot of useful technologies in addition to the database engine. Two of the newer ones are Notification Services, which is a platform for generating notifications based on subscriber requests, and Reporting Services, which is a platform for generating Web-based reports. Both of these technologies are about getting relevant data out to the end user. While Reporting Services provides subscriptions based on two built-in event types (TimedSubscription and SnapshotUpdated), you can leverage Notification Services to provide subscriptions based on a custom event source. In the article mentioned below, youÔÇÖll be educated on building a simple application that uses Notification Services and Reporting Services together to gather, format, and distribute data. After all, why make people hunt down the data they need when you can give them just what they want when they want it?

    10-03-2004 XP Service Pack

In Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2, Microsoft is introducing a set of security technologies that will help to improve the ability of Windows XP-based computers to withstand malicious attacks from viruses and worms. The technologies include network protection, memory protection, safer e-mail handling, more secure browsing, and improved computer maintenance.

Together, these security technologies will help to make it more difficult to attack Windows XP, even if the latest updates are not applied. These security technologies together are particularly useful in mitigation against worms and viruses.
This document found in the URL specifically focuses on the changes between earlier versions of Windows XP and Windows XP Service Pack 2 and reflects MicrosoftÔÇÖs early thinking about Service Pack 2 and its implications for developers. Examples and details are provided for several of the technologies that are experiencing the biggest changes. Future versions of this document will cover all new and changed technologies.

It a 100 page document with detailed information on the changes to the OS with Service Pack 2.

    10-03-2004 Offline Application Block

This guide describes the design and features of the Offline Application Block that you can incorporate into your smart client applications. By incorporating the Offline Application Block into your code, you can extend your smart client application capabilities to download data and still function when disconnected from the network. For example, when connected, the application will be able to consume the data exposed by a Web service and then allow users to work on that data when no longer connected to that service.

The guide provides an overview of the Offline Application Block, which is intended to serve as an architectural model for developers who want to add offline capabilities to their smart client applications. The block demonstrates how to:

Detect the presence or absence of network connectivity.
Cache the required data so that the application can continue to function even when the network connection is not available.
Synchronize the client application state and/or data with the server when the network connection becomes available.

Good luck with building your Smart Client Apps.

15-03-2004 Web Services Reliable Messaging Protocol

Microsoft just released the Web Services Reliable Messaging Protocol (WS-ReliableMessaging)

This specification (WS-ReliableMessaging) describes a protocol that allows messages to be delivered reliably between distributed applications in the presence of software component, system, or network failures. The protocol is described in this specification in a transport-independent manner allowing it to be implemented using different network technologies. To support interoperable Web services, a SOAP binding is defined within this specification.

The protocol defined in this specification depends upon other Web services specifications for the identification of service endpoint addresses and policies. How these are identified and retrieved are detailed within those specifications and are out of scope for this document.

See http://msdn.microsoft.com/webservice...emessaging.asp for the abstract and the details.
