A fresh start (with MSDE 2000 and ASP.NET Applications)

We recently got a few questions on how to use (install and configure) MSDE for ASP.NET applications. Especially for lightweight (hosted) websites, this is a preferable configuration. Now, I ran into a knowledge base article that relates to this topic. It shows how to use this combination of products, including the correct command-line options for configuration and setting the right security settings for ASP.NET.

Summary of KB Articles for XP SP2

As you might know Service Pack 2 of Windows XP is a service pack in which we harness our operating system. Of course, more security usually means less possibilities and flexibility. Most of the compatibility-issues have been addressed and a German colleague of mine created a list of Windows XP SP2 related info. Please use this list if you run into any specific problems.

One thing though: it might look as if Windows XP SP2 only creates problems, but this is not true: we really need to raise the bar when it comes to security. Research shows that ÔÇÿsecurityÔÇÖ is our customersÔÇÖ number 1 concern. In the end a higher security bar will let our customers be more productive and stable ÔÇô that that means you have ÔÇÿdrive with a seatbelt onÔÇÖ is very understandable.

Office 2003 Overview of Developer Technologies Whitepaper

Confused about smart documents, Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO), Research task pane, Information Bridge Framework (IBF), smart tags, InfoPath ... maybe not, but many of our customers and developers are.

There are many ways to build Office solutions, and it is often a challenge for customers and partners to understand the usefulness of a technology and to get guidance from Microsoft as to when to apply a technology to a particular situation. An important document has just been released to help address this need. This document is a 50+ page whitepaper that provides an overview of developer technologies that can be used to build Office 2003 solutions and guidance as to when to use which technology.

Part of the table of contents is shown below. Each section describes what the technology or tool is, benefits, and some of the key technical details that help understand how this technology can be incorporated into a solution. Then, Appendix 1 provides guidance as to which technology is better for a given scenario a customer may be considering.

The paper is available as a download from Microsoft.com:

All, after some time, once again some technical Microsoft information:

The Microsoft CRM 1.2 Feature Pack delivers additional features without additional license fees to Microsoft CRM customers. The feature pack increases the value of the CRM solution in three key areas: closer integration with Microsoft Office 2003, availability of Microsoft CRM Mobile 1.2 and additional feature enhancements.

The following components of the Microsoft CRM 1.2 feature pack are AVAILABLE TODAY.

    Microsoft CRM Mobile 1.2

Microsoft Business Solutions CRM Mobile is a mobile client for Microsoft CRM v1.2. Microsoft CRM Mobile provides salespeople with up-to-date information about their accounts and contacts, and helps them manage sales opportunities and track sales-related activities.

    Overview
The following Microsoft CRM Mobile components are installed on each mobile device and on the computer running Microsoft CRM Server in the corporate network:

Microsoft CRM Mobile. Runs on the mobile device. Users can view and enter data related to relevant accounts, contacts, opportunities, and activities when the mobile device is disconnected. When corporate network access is available, data on the mobile device can be synchronized with data in Microsoft CRM. Users choose the subset of data that applies to them so that only relevant data is downloaded to the device.

Microsoft CRM Mobile server components. These components synchronize data between mobile devices and the Microsoft CRM server. Two tools are included for system administrators:

Mobile Deployment Manager is used to create deployment packages. Deployment packages are used to install and configure Microsoft CRM Mobile on mobile devices, and can also be used to configure other device settings.

CRM Mobile Customization is used to customize which Microsoft CRM data will be available to mobile users and to customize the look of forms and views on the device.

    Microsoft CRM Redeployment Tool
The Microsoft Business Solutions CRM redeployment tools consist of the User Data Export Wizard and the Microsoft CRM Redeployment Wizard. These wizards and the processes described in the accompanying documentation are designed to help system administrators and software developers redeploy Microsoft CRM data in a new Microsoft CRM implementation. A redeployment using these tools will copy the Microsoft CRM application data, system customizations, system settings, security settings, and any custom reports to the new implementation.

    Enterprise Development Reference Architecture (EDRA)

Microsoft is happy to announce the availability of EDRA 1.1 Community Release. The goal of the project was to provide architectural guidance that an organization can use to standardize the development of distributed systems. The project would not have been possible without the support of the field and the community, for which we are grateful.

EDRA helps standardize the internal architecture of a distributed application. The particular challenges it addresses are relevant on todayÔÇÖs platform, however may not be as relevant in future technologies. Therefore, EDRA 1.1 is the final release of the Global Bank Reference built on top of the .NET Framework 1.1. The source code will remain available for the community to use; however, there will be no additional releases from this code base. Stay tuned for more information early next year as the PAG team (Patterns & Architecture Group) begins a project to take on the latest distributed design challenges using MicrosoftÔÇÖs BizTalk and "Indigo" technologies.

EDRA is available on its GotDotNet workspace at http://workspaces.gotdotnet.com/shadowfx

Authentication and Access Control Diagnostics 1.0

Authentication and authorization failures are common on Internet Information Services (IIS) platforms. AuthDiag is a tool designed to aid customers in effectively troubleshooting and determining the root cause of the problem.

    Overview
Authentication and Access Control Diagnostics 1.0 (more commonly known as AuthDiag) is a tool released by Microsoft aimed at aiding IT professionals and developers at more effectively finding the source of authentication and authorization failures.

These users have often seen behavior from Internet Information Services (IIS) that doesn't seem appropriate or random when users authenticate to the IIS server. The complex world of authentication types and the various levels of security permissions necessary to allow a user to access the server causes many hours of labor for those tasked with troubleshooting these problems.

AuthDiag 1.0 offers a robust tool that offers a efficient method for troubleshooting authentication on IIS 5.x and 6.0. It will analyze metabase configuration and system-wide policies and warn users of possible points of failure and guide them to resolving the problem. AuthDiag 1.0 also includes a robust monitoring tool called AuthMon designed at capturing a snapshot of the problem while it occurs in real-time. AuthMon is robust and specially designed for IIS servers removing any information not pertinent to the authentication or authorization process.

Deployment patters voor .Net compact framework

Most of you know about our Updater Application Block ÔÇô it helps you in making a centrally updateable WinForms application.

    Its main features:
Implement a "pull" based update solution for .NET applications.
Use cryptographic validation techniques to verify the authenticity of application updates before applying them.
Perform post-deployment configuration tasks without user intervention.
Write applications that automatically update themselves to the latest available version.

    Details and code on: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...ntPatterns.asp

Now, Microsoft has also released the same technology for .NET applications running on PocketPCÔÇÖs (.NET Compact Framework)!

    See http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...ntPatterns.asp for the details.

This really supports the mobile-developer in creating manageable PDA applications.
